15 Predictions for The Wicked King by Holly Black

Please note: There are spoilers of sorts for The Cruel Prince, and potential spoilers for The Wicked King.

Full disclosure, I have read the first chapter of The Wicked King which was an extract at the end of my copy of The Cruel Prince.

These are my own thoughts. However, I fully understand and accept that it is highly likely someone somewhere will probably have had the same thoughts, and put them into their own posts on social media.

So, here we go with my 15 predictions for The Wicked King:

  1. Jude, and Prince High King Cardan will share more intimate moments and smooches whilst continuing to convince themselves they hate each other. They probably won’t become an established couple—if they do it will towards the end of the book.

  2. General Madoc will seek to get some form of revenge on Jude for upsetting his plans, and will seek to find Oak—and possibly find him, and bring him back to the world of the Faerie.

  3. Locke will cause trouble, and “create” some new stories. He will be especially focussed on Jude and attempt to re-insert himself into her story.

  4. Cardan will seek many ways to undermine Jude in any, and every, way he can given the restrictions.

  5. Taryn will continue to be an idiot under Locke’s thrall—maybe even show she has a bit of a cruel streak of her own.

  6. There will be at least one assassination attempt on Cardan’s life—probably more.

  7. One member of the Court of Shadows will betray Jude, switch sides, and become a mole for Madoc, Balekin, or some future, unknown schemer.

  8. Balekin is going to be doing some plotting and scheming.

  9. Madoc will see it in his best strategic interests to keep secretly aligned with Balekin.

  10. (Former High King) Eldred will be revealed as still being alive—some form of faerie magic will have saved his life. Or at the very least, the red moths will have some form of significance.

  11. Vivi will tell Heather everything (or almost everything) and they will continue to be a beautiful couple we don’t see nearly enough of.

  12. Jude and Nicasia will become friends—or as close to it as they can be, bonding over a mutual distaste for Locke and how he “ruins everything”—maybe they’ll even join forces to give him a taste of his own medicine (time permitting).

  13. Nicasia will (successfully?) attempt to become Cardan’s consort.

  14. Something will happen to The Blood Crown—most likely there will be an attempt to destroy it in a bid to seize/expand their own power. My money would be on Lord Roiben or Queen Orlagh—maybe both, together or separately.

  15. Oriana will be cast out, or worse, by Madoc now he has no need for her. Perhaps she will join Vivi and Oak in the mortal world.

I’ll be the first to admit that some of these are wishful thinking, others a little far-fetched, but this is a book within the fantasy genre with magic–so anything is possible.

Anyway, what do you think of my predictions? Are there any you agree/disagree with?

Do you have any predictions of your own?

Let me know in the comments.
